A Splendid Change

I set out gangbusters on the Splendid Sampler until I got to Block 7! That one involves embroidery. Don’t hate, don’t love it! I am choosing to cut the blocks and trace the designs for all the embroidery blocks, and then work on them all at once. Besides that gives me more time to find my embroidery floss!

So, I had created this block #4:

Nothing striking about it and the stems that are embroidered are LOST! Doesn’t do much for the group, and was pretty blah!

I looked at others blocks and knew I could do better. And so I had a do over… I used a bright white background and cheerier fabrics. Much better!

Works well with the group.

From there I moved on to block 8. It was pretty straightforward, and am pleased with the selections made.

Over the holidays, I will have some time to sew a little more. I am hoping to knock out a couple more blocks, get back to my longarm and curl up with these borrowed books:

Enjoy the day!

A Great Weekend…

without sewing? How can that be?

Time with Family and time to prepare a bit for the holidays.

My husband and grandson spotted how our newspaper was delivered on Saturday.. With LOVE! I am sure that the delivery person had no idea that they left behind this pattern behind, but thank you!! How random was that?

We had just a light dusting of snow…

and tiny footprints on the porch.

A visit with Santa:

Along with a movie and pizza. Fun day!

Who knew that there really is power in a cheesehead?

The list is always long of the things we should do, or feel like we have to do for Christmas. While I don’t feel as behind as I have in the past, progress has felt slow. I would like to finish a few things off, get my house clean and then sew or relax!! We will see how that goes. In the meantime, I did get most gifts wrapped, and a small tree up. This year I went with a baking theme on a little white 2 foot tree.

All placed on top of a parlor cabinet for a treadle sewing machine. My goal is to figure this out next year!!

Already looking forward to next year’s ventures!

Shenanigans and More…

The More…

I had started a project for some pillow covers a few weeks back. Now I am at the point where I just need to come up with a backing and finish these.

The old pillows were made from grain sacks that I bought some time ago. While I still like them, it is time for a bit of a change.

So here’s what they look like now..

Also, I had seen this quilt, and wrote about it in my Simply Inspired post.

Using my Wing Clipper template from Studio 180, I continue to make slow and steady progress. I am actually up to 250 pieced flying geese units.

So, my only issue with this may be that I might not be able to find a black that is a close enough match to what I am already using. I have used every bit up for the smaller squares. I am pretty sure that I will still have a lot of the larger printed squares left in the end. So, I should put a swatch in my purse and try to find a good match. After looking back at my inspiration, I may actually go with a blue in between my rows. No specific size in mind for this quilt. And I may not even go with the design that was a part of my original inspiration. I always wait to see where a piece goes. When I see a quilt that inspires me, it is sometimes just the jumping off point.

The Shenanigans…

A young boy wondered what St. Nick would do this year… in light of the fact that a big dinosaur showed up in his yard last year.

So, last night, there were two not so stealthy elves who got caught helping St. Nick… They got the last inflatable “elf on the shelf” , down from the shelf with the help of an elf.

Then the stealth elves (me and the old man) drove over and parked down the block from the boy’s house. By flashlight, we prepared… to install said elf from the shelf next to the dinosaur with the elves riding on it’s back. The big dog Archer could be seen… keeping watch through the curtains, and even barking at the lady who ended up on the wrong block. They paused for a bit, until the dog settled down, and then crept up to the house. The big dinosaur had to be unplugged for a moment, then re inflated. Elf on the shelf was added in to the electric. One stake into the ground, two stakes into the ground… and then, big dog’s head appeared through the curtain… Then son-in-law’s head appeared… through the curtain. The curtain very quickly closed. Stealth elves, quickly added the final two stakes, whilst the curtains rustled and Mom and Dad’s eyes peeked out. Elves dashed quickly down the block… into a waiting getaway vehicle. Backed away.. without lights. And then a boy was surprised to see the “elf on the shelf” looking at him from the yard!

I never want to be too old to commit random acts of shenanigans!

Splendidly Late to This Party

While I am constantly looking at all kinds of great quilt inspiration on the webs, sometimes I miss out on something going on… In this case it is the Splendid Sampler put together by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson. These ladies organized many talented designers to create 100+ six inch blocks to create a beautiful sampler. Since February of 2016, each week 2 new blocks are released and available for download. Next year, a book will be released with all of the blocks. So, as I indicated, I am late to starting, but am enjoying the challenges that each new block brings. Some of the techniques are not my favorites… but I will persevere, and perhaps even begin to like and be better at some of them!

In the last couple of days I have managed to put together 6 new blocks. Working with small piecing provides it’s own challenges, and the 6 inch blocks can be pretty involved. So, here they are in order:

Aside from that, I had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and here is a small glimpse of what I did…

A cruise to Cabo San Lucas… and some time in CA with this cute little boy!

Go check out the Splendid Sampler at the site, on Pinterest and Instagram. You will be inspired by the great variety of colors and patterns! 84 blocks have already been released out of the 100. So, I only have 94 more to do!

Enjoy the day,
